Kristin was inspired by this photo of Patuxent Research Refuge in Maryland, taken by photographer Ian Shive to create a complex speckled colorway full of bright reds, pinks, golds and greens that captures the essence of this peaceful place just a 45-minute drive from both Baltimore and Washington, DC.
Setting Sun will be dyed on two bases:
Little Sister Fingering, a Superwash Merino single-ply fingering with a generous 434 yards per skein, perfect for shawls, sweaters and other accessories
Mama Bear DK, a luxurious blend of 45% baby alpaca, 45% Merino and 10% silk, ideal for sweaters with drape, shawls and warm accessories. It has 245 yards per skein.

The problem: the color of this yarn is very different from the original photos soliciting orders. Those photos showed a highly variegated yarn with many different bright colors, like the Setting Sun of the name. What I got was two muddy and subdues skeins that were about 50% undyed portions, and with no bright colors at all in the dyed parts. I buy a *lot* of indie yarn and understand some difference should be expected, but this was close to unrecognizable. Other reviewers talk about gorgeous and rich colors - sounds like those buyers received skeins that looked like the sample ones! IMO the dyer should have pulled substandard skeins instead of shipping them.
The good: The DK alpaca/merino/silk yarn base is luscious. Also, Lisa tried to help - she took photos of the only other two skeins she had, but they were only a little better.
The not so great: per IU policy, I am stuck with the postage both ways ($9.97 total) for yarn that was so different from the original photos that it was I couldn't use it and never would have bought it for anything.
Overall I'm pretty disappointed - was looking forward to making a Fair Isle sweater with a variegated yoke, using some merino/alpaca yarn I had on hand as the MC. If it had been as shown in the original photo, it would have been stunning, but the yarn that was shipped would have made a muddy and unattractive sweater. Now I'm out $10 and have to start over looking for CC yarn for the yoke.
Two stars rather than one because Lisa took the time to send photos of the other two skeins she had on hand, both in the skein & unwound, so I could see if they would work better. Sure wish they had - loved the base & the original photos!

KraeO is a favorite dyer of mine and is fairly local for me - 2.5 hours away ;-) The colorway is rich and the hanks are so very soft. The theme of Knitting Our National Parks is what drew my attention to it.
